"Fifty-Five Years in Five Acts: My Life in Opera"
Astrid Varnay
...order this book here.
Varnay's relaxed, conversational memoir covers the American soprano's life from her childhood as the daughter of two opera singers through her own career, which ran from the 1940s to the 1990s and which was closely associated with Wagnerian roles (as well as Beethoven and Strauss). Varnay's unpretentious narrative includes plenty of anecdotes about her colleagues. She vividly conveys what daily life in an opera house is like and offers frank opinions about the practice of contemporary opera production.

Yaltah Menuhin's memory has been honoured with a memorial fund in her name, the Yaltah Menuhin Memorial Fund. The objective of the fund: to help develop the talents of young pianists who have already given proof of their outstanding musical ability and promise in the practice of their art. The Yaltah Menuhin Award will be given to the first-prize winner in one of the categories of the Young Pianist Foundation Competition [SEE SITE], which is held in Amsterdam biennally. The YPF provides a helping hand to talented young pianists on their way to the major international stages, and has on its Council such pianists as Martha Argerich, Alfred Brendel, Evgeny Kissin, Krystian Zimerman and Emanuel Ax; Vladimir Ashkenazy is Patron of the Foundation. A website dedicated to Yaltah [See Site] has been designed and is in continual development. Further information can be obtained by e mail [click on] thank you, Yours sincerely, Iain C. - "Yehudi Menuhin: A Life"
One of the best-loved classical musicians of the twentieth century, Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999)
was born in New York City to Russian Jewish immigrants. The gifted violinist gave his first solo
recital at the age of eight and within five years rose to international fame. In addition to his
enduring career as a performer and conductor, Menuhin was a tireless champion of humanitarian
causes, ran the Bath Festival, founded a renowned music school, and served as cultural
ambassador to the United Nations.
