    5 SEPTEMBER 1908, Birth of Cuban-Spanish pianist and composer Joaquin NIN-CULMELL in Berlin. Joaquín Nin-Culmell d-age 95, in Oakland, CA 14 JAN 2004. Was composer of Spanish-style piano pieces. He was the son of Cuban-Spanish composer Joaquín Nin y Castellanos and Danish-French-Cuban singer Rosa Culmell. He studied in Paris and Spain (with Falla), settling in the USA in 1938. He wrote a Mass for the consecration of St Mary's Cathedral, San Francisco (1970), and the opera La celestina (1965-80), as well as instrumental and chamber pieces and songs with strong Spanish elements...

    Michal Nesterowicz



    Michal Nesterowicz has won the International Conducting Competition in Barcelona. Seventy five entrants competed for the awards. The international jury was chaired by the famous Russian conductor Gennadi Rozhdestvensky. Thirty four year-old Nesterowicz is delighted with the success, which gives him the opportunity to appear with over 30 leading European orchestras during the next three years.

  • The City of Birmingham Symphony orchestra has named as music director: Andris Nelsons
  • The Latvian-born Andris Nelsons was appointed, aged 23, as Principal Conductor of the Latvian National Opera in the 2003/04 season. A post he holds today, along with being newly appointed Principal Conductor of the Nordwest Deutsche Philharmonie Herford, from the 2006/07 season. These are achievements which, in the early stages of an international career, have already distinguished the name of Andris Nelsons as a name to watch.
