Paula Robison, flute

Paula Robison (born June 8, 1941) is a flutist and music teacher. Robison was recognized early as one of the great solo flutists of her generation, at a time when few if any had careers outside an orchestra. Her broad education, however, developed in the highly cultivated and morally conscious family environment she grew up in and in her training with outstanding teachers, has given her a passion for theater, dance, and all the arts, as well as a humanistic perspective on music and the instrument she plays. Ms. Robison puts this to work in her teaching and in her collaborative work with contemporary music groups like Argento New Music and in museum contexts. WIKIPEDIA

Olga Rudge

Olga Rudge (13 April 1895, Youngstown, Ohio – 15 March 1996) was an American-born concert violinist, now mainly remembered as the long-time mistress of the poet Ezra Pound, by whom she had a daughter, Mary. A gifted concert violinist of international repute, her considerable talents and reputation were eventually eclipsed by those of her lover, in whose shade she appeared content to remain. In return, Pound was more loyal, not to say faithful, to her than to any of his many other mistresses. He dedicated the final stanza of his epic The Cantos to her, in homage and gratitude for her courageous and loyal support of Pound during his 13 year incarceration in a mental hospital after having been indicted for treasonous activities against the United States and in support of Benito Mussolini's Fascist regime. She also defended Pound against the accusation that he was anti-Semitic. During the last 11 years of Pound's life, Rudge was his devoted companion, secretary, and nurse, as he sank into eccentricity and prolonged silences.

Paul Robeson

Paul Leroy Robeson (April 9, 1898 – January 23, 1976) was an African-American concert singer (bass-baritone), recording artist, athlete and actor who became noted for his political radicalism and activism in the civil rights movement. The son of an escaped slave, Robeson was the first major concert star to popularize the performance of Negro spirituals and was the first black actor of the 20th century to portray Shakespeare's Othello in a production with an all white cast.

  • Italian tenor Gianni Raimondi has died at age 85

Raimondi, who sang with diva Maria Callas and other opera legends, has died aged 85, Milan's La Scala opera house said Friday. Raimondi died on Sunday, 19 OCT 2008, at his home in Pianoro near Bologna in central Italy. La Scala said in in a statement that he had requested that his death not be announced until after his private funeral. La Scala described Raimondi, who was born in 1923, as having "one of the biggest voices of his time." Raimondi gave 270 performances, including a standout display in Luchino Visconti's 1956 version of Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata". He appeared in Vienna, Berlin, London and New York and worked with Callas and orchestra great Herbert von Karajan at La Scala.

    Kate Royal

Kate Royal may be just at the beginning of her career, but the signs of greatness are clear already. The thrilling young English soprano possesses an elegant voice, aristocratic bearing, and a riveting stage presence, and has already dazzled critics and audiences alike at the BBC Proms, Teatro Real (Madrid), and the festivals of Edinburgh and Glyndebourne. "Artists like her don't come along very often. An obvious comparison is Dame Felicity Lott—another refined diva at home in both opera and recital...Kate Royal is already in a class of her own" (The Times, London).
