 Natalie Clein (born 25 March 1977, Poole, Dorset) is a British cellist. Her mother is a professional violinist. Her sister is the actress Louisa Clein. Clein started playing the cello at the age of six, and studied with Anna Shuttleworth and Alexander Baillie at the Royal College of Music where she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Scholarship. She has also studied with Heinrich Schiff in Vienna.

Elliott Cook Carter Jr. (December 11, 1908 – November 5, 2012) was a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer. He studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris in the 1930s, and then returned to the United States. After a neoclassical phase, he went on to write atonal, rhythmically complex music. His compositions, which have been performed all over the world, include orchestral and chamber music as well as solo instrumental and vocal works. He was extremely productive in his later years, publishing more than 40 works between the ages of 90 and 100, and over 14 more after he turned 100 in 2008. Maria Callas (Greek: Μαρία Κάλλας) (December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977) was an American-born Greek soprano and one of the most renowned opera singers of the 20th century. She combined an impressive bel canto technique, a wide-ranging voice and great dramatic gifts. An extremely versatile singer, her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini and Rossini; further, to the works of Verdi and Puccini; and, in her early career, to the music dramas of Wagner. Her remarkable musical and dramatic talents led to her being hailed as La Divina.

VAN CLIBURN

Harvey Lavan "Van" Cliburn Jr. (born July 12, 1934) is an American pianist who achieved worldwide recognition in 1958, at age 23, he won the first quadrennial International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow, at the height of the Cold War. Van Cliburn was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and began taking piano lessons at the age of three from his mother, Rildia Bee O'Bryan Cliburn. O'Bryan was taught by Arthur Friedheim, a pupil of Franz Liszt. At six years old, Cliburn moved with his family to Kilgore, Texas, and at twelve he won a statewide piano competition which enabled him to debut with the Houston Symphony Orchestra. He entered the Juilliard School at age 17, and studied under Rosina Lhévinne, who trained him in the tradition of the great Russian romantics. At age 20, Cliburn won the Leventritt Award, and made his Carnegie Hall debut.

31 JULY 1808 Birth of English-American composer and cellist  Frederick Nichols CROUCH. d-1896.Frederick Nichols Crouch was an English composer and cellist. Crouch was born in Marylebone in London. He emigrated to the United States in 1849 and settled in Richmond, Virginia. During the Civil War, Crouch took up arms and played the trumpet for the Confederacy. Crouch was noted as a fine cellist, having played in the King's Theatre as well as St. Paul's Cathedral in London, before coming to the United States, but the majority of his compositions were not successful. During his years in the United States, Crouch composed two operas and unsuccessfully tried various musical undertakings (conducting, singing and teaching). Well traveled after the Civil War, Crouch eventually settled in Baltimore, Maryland. Emma Elizabeth Crouch (1835–1886), the second daughter of his first marriage, became known in Second Empire France as the courtesan Cora Pearl. ELLIOT CARTER

For more than a half century, the money sat largely untouched, accruing in a bank account managed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This summer, the BSO has tapped into the now $2.4 million Horblitt Fund. The cause: composer Elliott Carter, who turns 100 this year. Carter's work has been championed by BSO music director James Levine for years. Now, drawing as much as $400,000 from the fund, the BSO is pushing to spread word of Carter beyond the close-knit symphony world.

Remembering Wayne Connor

Operatic tenor Wayne Conner was a classical-music radio personality as well as a teacher at The Curtis Institute of Music, The Academy of Vocal Arts and the Peabody Institute. For 30 years, he also produced and hosted WHYY's "Singer's World" and "Collector's Corner." Connor died May 9 of liver cancer at the age of 79.
