The Latvian-born Andris Nelsons was appointed, aged 23, as Principal Conductor of the Latvian National Opera in the 2003/04 season. A post he holds today, along with being newly appointed Principal Conductor of the Nordwest Deutsche Philharmonie Herford, from the 2006/07 season. These are achievements which, in the early stages of an international career, have already distinguished the name of Andris Nelsons as a name to watch.
